Preserving the tradition of Mahjong through reimagining gameplay enablement.

The Problem

There's been a rise in Mahjong social events across the country with a growing number of people taking interest in learning the game, however, Mahjong is a game with very complex rulesets. These events often begin with a long tutorial, but once gameplay begins, how can players quickly reference the rules?

Most events rely on printed rule cards at each table, but these cards' limited space forces the rules to be heavily simplified. As a result, they often omit important details while also taking up valuable table space.

The Plan

Create a sitemap and wireframe to plan contents needed for enablement.

The Brand

I wanted the brand to embody the following: friendly, clean and fun. I also created a mascot called Chowder to make the experience more approachable.

Mobile-First Enablement App

The app needs to serve as an easily accessible instructional manual for in-person Mahjong social events. Therefore, the solution was to create a mobile-first Mahjong App, accessed by QR code, that both enables beginners and refreshes game rules for those who have played before.

Scan the QR Code

Keeps the Mahjong table clutter-free, and no more need to pass around and share paper instructions. This allows enablement to be accessible by all players easily on their devices, at all times of game play.

Step-by-Step Animated Guidance

Mahjong set up can be a tedious step for beginners, the app walks through the game play set up as well as game play rules with animated visuals. Users can also jump between topics to refresh on a specific rule they are looking for.

Cheatsheets for Quick Refreshers

The app features cheatsheets divided into tile, calls, and winning combination overviews, which are common topics return players need quick-glance refreshers on.
